  • The Road To Somewhere The Road To Somewhere

    • From: billybedamned
    • Description:

Some things just strike me as absurd. Take for instance "The Road To Somewhere". A couple of years ago local developers got involved with the city government to clean up a uhh, uhh, well to put it lightly, a fricking cesspool. It's a chemical nightmare.

It's a really great project and I'm proud to be part of it. When we're done we will be restoring the wetland habitat that was indiginous to the area prior to the invasion of the chemical dumpers. Our company is tasked with the civil engineering portion of the project.

Magically somehow the poo from chemical plant 1 did not cross the property lines. When the poo was dumped on the ground it stayed out of chemical plant 2, the goo factory. There was no previous poo goo intermingling. OK. Uh-huh.

So now we have Soils Management Zone 4 being the poo factory and Soils Management Zone 5 is the goo factory. You guessed it, the road to somewhere is in both Soils Management Zones.

The environmental remediation process for this is an operation in itself. That's what I'm doing right now. Figuring out how the big yellow things will build the road to somewhere while staying in their appropriate, you guessed it, Soil Management Zone.

That's not a real difficult task for me. Peanut butter and jelly only touch if they are between two slices of bread. Mashed potatoes and gravy don't touch corn either. They're ememies.

It's simple. The #4 and the #5 big yellow things are enemies. They don't touch. They don't eat lunch together. Their people don't even get to use the same driveway.

Why did we need the road to somewhere you might ask? I'm sure you've wondered by now where the road to somewhere may lead.

The first part of the project was building a $10,000,000 bridge across the wetlands. The road to somewhere is between the bridge to nowhere and the frontage road along the interstate. Now we didn't build a bridge to nowhere. We built a bridge to somewhere. See how that works?

As I said before local developers teamed up with the government to fund this thing. Local taxpayers were upset that their money had been spent on "The Bridge To Nowhere". To fix that they are going to spend more tax payer money on the road to somewhere. The taxpayers are now happy.

I think that's absurd given our time. People are starving and losing their homes from the recession. Perhaps it is me that is absurd.

  • Phillip Adams. Pick 224! Phillip Adams. Pick 224!

    • From: fivedecadefan
    • Description:

This off-season I did something I have never done before. I watched the NFL draft. Sorry in advance to those of you I offended but in the past that has been a major league snoozer for me. Why spend all that time watching it when I can just read the cliff notes? Why was this year different?

After more than half a century as a Forty Niner fan I was ready to toss in the towel. Frustration had overcome me. It wasn't the players that I was upset with but the management of the team itself.

I didn't agree with the firing of Mike Nolan. Not that he didn't need to be fired. Hey, even Rod Marinelli got the courtesy of finishing the season. While Nolan made some poor decisions, he made many good ones too. Nolan was hired to right the ship so to speak. To accomplish that he knew one of the things he would need is the defensive wisdom of his friend Mike Singletary.

At first I was upset with the 49ers and resented Coach Mike. I researched him. The more I researched Mike Singletary the man, not the football player and coach, the more fascinated I became with him. Evidenced by his loyalty to his friend Mike Nolan, I long ago determined the people in Mike Singletary's life are more important to him than a lucrative career as one of the 32 head coaches in the NFL. I like the personal values of Mike Singletary.

With the departure of the McCloughan brothers, my faith in the 49er management was restored. I was watching the draft because I wanted to see what Trent Baalke and Mike Singletary had planned. Would they take the best player available at the time or address the needs of the team? Would I need to look for a new team this year?

Davis, Iupati, Mays, Bowman, Dixon, Byham, Williams. Each of those guys has a specific skill set the team until now was lacking. Unlike drafts of the recent past, Baalke and Singletary had done their due diligence on the players selected. As I watched the draft unfold I realized that Baalke and Singletary had chosen to address the needs of the team.

Ranked 21st in pass defense last year the secondary needed to be addressed. The addition of Taylor Mays provided an upgrade for the aging Mark Roman. What about the corner position? Due to his knee injury Walt Harris' retirement was almost a certainty at the beginning of last year. That was a deficiency that needed to be addressed too. So far the Baalke Singletary draft coalition had pulled off a brilliant draft in my opinion. What about the cornerback position?

With their 7th round pick the 49ers chose Phillip Adams of South Carolina State University. As the school quickly flashed on and then off the TV screen I took a double take. Did they just say SC State? I hit the back button on the DVR. Yep they sure did say SC State. A short jaunt through the woods from my house lies SC State. I was familiar with the school.

Known more for it's academic excellence achievements in business, biology, engineering, computers, literature and the arts than it is for producing NFL players, I was surprised to hear the 49ers selected a player from SC State.

It's a common misconception there is a lesser talent level in Division 1 than the ACC, SEC, PAC 10 or Big 12. Chris Gocong, Marques Colston and Randy Moss probably have something to say about that. I do too. I attended a Division 1 school, coincidentally the same school as John Madden. While I never impacted the NFL, certainly the latter did.

Phillip Adams wasn't invited to the NFL combine. How does a player fly completely under the radar and land an NFL contract? Who is this Phillip Adams guy? How does a guy from the lower right hand corner of the US map end up playing for a team in the upper left hand corner of the map? How did the Niners get wind of him?

There were many questions in my mind that day. I was happy that a hometown player had been chosen by my team. I became an instant fan of Phillip Adams.

I googled Phillip Adams SC State. I didn't find much out there on him. I found enough to satisfy myself Baalke and Singletary had performed their due diligence. They had taken it to the same degree they did with Davis and Iupati. It's no accident that Phillip Adams is a 49er. Mike Singletary is building a physical team in San Francisco.

Phillip Adams is a physical player. Phrases like "physically dominating player", "dominated the line of scrimmage", "excellent down field ball-hawking skills", "has the ability to close when playing off his man", "transitions out of his backpedal smoothly", "his basketball skills show up on the field" are used to describe Phillip. An All-MEAC first team defensive back Phillip also spent some time on SC State's basketball court.

In my research of Mike Singletary I learned that he has a high level of personal standards he expects his players to meet. He would and has passed on signing players who possessed needed talent. He did that because he felt they would not be a good fit for the team.

I have been looking for online football footage of Phillip. The only thing I was able to find is a video of him addressing a group military folks. He was talking about his being signed by the Niners. In the video he stated that he was recruited by some big schools. He said SC State is the school that stuck by him. That's the reason he chose them to sign with.

In that video Phillip not only exhibited that he has a high level of loyalty in his personal makeup but he is also confident, yet humble too. That is a quality necessary to be a team player. Phillip knows he will have to work hard to make the roster.

Being the first to sign his contract shows me that he has a solid work ethic. Among other compliments, his former head coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough said of Phillip, "Phillip's a hard-working guy." I am impressed with Phillip Adams the man. I believe Mike Singletary is too.

At pick number 220 Mike Singletary called Phillip Adams at his mother's house in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Coach Singletary informed Phillip that if he was available in the seventh round, he would be the Niners pick. Phillip already knew he was going in the 7th round. The Green Bay Packers had already called him and told him the same thing. They had pick 230.

"I can't describe the feeling when I saw my name. I got picked by a team with a great coach and one that is on the way back up," Adams said. From all the reading I've done about Phillip, he is happy to be a Forty Niner.

The Forty Niners need an aggressive, ball hawking, intimidating, physical corner that is a hard working team player. That is just what Mike Singletary found in Phillip Adams. I believe that Phillip will make the 53 man roster. Did I mention that he also has punt return abilities? Due diligence on the 7th round pick just like the first.

This is a rare year for me. I get to go to two games. I'll be at the Atlanta and the Carolina game. If Phillip makes the 53 man roster I'll be wearing his jersey in the Falcons and Panthers houses.

This is one 49er fan that is happy Phillip was the 224th pick and not the 230th.

  • Nate Clements A "Lock Down Cor Nate Clements A "Lock Down Corner"?

    • From: Niner4ever
    • Description:

"I'm the best cornerback in the NFL. I'm not just blowing smoke…film doesn't lie." A quote made by Nate Clements in 2005 to news reporter Jon Robinson: http://sports.ign.com/articles/655/655045p1.html

It is never good to see a corner back in a photo where he is looking at the back of the opposing wide receiver. The photo for the article shows just that. Nate Clements gave up 207 receiving yards to Terrell Owens two years ago at the old Dallas Stadium in Irving, Texas.

I sat in the stands with 30 other Dallas Cowboy fans screaming at me from all sides. All I could do was cringe and grimace as the 80 million dollar man was roasted for the second time in the afternoon.

Nate Clements equals the second part of this discussion of what it is going to take for the 49ers to return to champions. Nate Clements is a large part of the equations due to the fact that 49ers pass defense ranked 21st overall in the NFL in 2009.

The 49ers pass defense allowed an average of 229 yards per game last year. This stat is largely due to Nate Clements not being who he said he was. Lock Down corners titles are reserved for the Deion Sanders and Darrell Greens of the world.

Nate Clements former member of "The Ohio State Buckeyes" has been torched by Lance Moore, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Roddy White to name a few. This is unacceptable from a seasoned Pro-Bowl veteran.

The huge hopes the 49ers had of Nate Clements when he came to the 49ers via free agency from the Buffalo Bills have been diminished, due to Nate's erratic play the last couple of seasons.

The loyal faithful thought they were getting a Ronnie Lott type to secure the corner position for years to come. What we have received is a cornerback with huge untapped ability, who lacks the mental ability to read and react properly to the play in front of him.

Watching Nate is like a watching a roller coaster ride. On one play he will look like a superstar, and on the next play look like a rookie who forgot the play book. Nate was replaced in the line up in 2009 with unproven third year veteran Tarrell Brown. The results of the change are mixed, but one thing is for sure no 200 yard days by a receiver were reported.

Nate has had some highlights for the 49ers with two field goal blocks recovered for touchdowns. He has had some big interceptions in his 49er career as well. The one thing that hasn't been recorded is consistent play.

Nate has the athleticism and speed to stay with any receiver in the game. He like Alex Smith has mental issues to overcome. Except Nate’s mental issue is one of over confidence. Nate has let a small amount of success breed complacency in his game. Ronnie Lott never took plays off to wave to his folks in the stand.

Nate Clements has to make a concerted effort this year to be more of a team player and less of a guessing gambler. Tarrell Brown did his best to keep all plays in front of him. Nate Clements would do well to try this same approach.

Nate’s shoulder should be healed in 2010. It is my hope that his ego has been as well. Confidence is a great thing, but over confidence in a humans personality breeds trouble.

Ronnie Lott never allowed a wide out to get 200 yards in a game. Ronnie Lott remained a stellar player throughout his career. Nate Clements at this point is at best an overpaid cornerback with an inflated ego.

It is not fair to judge any man against a Ronnie Lott. However, it is also unfair for a man to represent himself as a lock down cornerback when the pictures don’t lie.

Nate’s best performance will be needed in 2010 in order for this team to return to Champions!

  • What will it take to Return to What will it take to Return to Champions?

    • From: Niner4ever
    • Description:

As a kid growing up I had the pleasure of watching the San Francisco 49ers win 5 Super Bowls. From the beginning of this journey there were always nay sayers. People would always doubt the greatness and ability of this 49er team. Today those doubters double in number, due to the teams’ inability too not only win a playoff game, but get to the playoffs.

This 2010 team has a ton of potential, but can they be the team that returns this team to greatness? Let’s see what steps this team has to take to become champions of the NFL once more.

Quarterback: Alex Smith since his draft day in 2005 has been pressured to be the quarterback who could get this team back to the playoffs, and unfortunately for Alex none of the pieces fell in place right away. The Alex Smith apologists provide many arguments in his defense.

He was without a permanent offensive coordinator for 4 of his first five years. He had no viable options at wide receiver. He was behind one of the worse offensive lines in the NFL. Don't forget in his rookie year Alex was also coupled with seeing the collapse and eventual fatality of offensive lineman Thomas Herrion in the locker room after a preseason game in Denver.

All of those reason engulfed Alex as his numbers continued to disappoint the faithful fans. Alex has performed in 43 games throughout his career with a total of 37 touchdowns and 43 interceptions. His career qb rating and completion record is 69.7 and 56.1 respectively. His win loss record is 16 and 24 over the 5 year period.

Alex improved nicely last year after taking over the helm from Shaun Hill in week 7 against the Houston Texans. Alex won 5 of the last 10 games he played in. His numbers improved markedly with the assistance of Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree and Frank Gore as primary weapons in the offense.

Alex displayed the ability to win against NFC West divisional foe Arizona Cardinals, and non-conference opponent Jacksonville Jaguars. However, was unable to pull the rabbit out of the hat against the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks or Philadelphia Eagles. Games that were critically needed to get into the playoffs. Not that it all falls on Alex Smith's shoulders to win, but he enjoys the rewards or the negative perception of the success or the failure of the team.

In order for the 49ers to return to champions in 2010 Alex Smith must have the best year of his young career. He like many others has a great reason to have a chip on his shoulder, and a reason to play his heart out. He is another player that coach Singletary has put faith in to. With the addition of tackle Anthony Davis of Rutgers and guard Mike Iupati of Idaho the team has shown great faith with building an offensive line to protect the oft criticized quarterback.

Alex has been exposed to loss of comrades, injuries and failures on the job, and a demotion of position. He has gone from boom to bust. Alex like many others on this team has a reason to want to overcome past failures and see this team prosper. Hopefully he will execute and be highly effective in 2010, and this team will have a chance to return to champions.

  • Russian Roulette Russian Roulette

    • From: fivedecadefan
    • Description:

Another round of Russian Roulette. It's a crap shoot. A roll of the dice. Will this blog get posted at all? For it to be read will I have to post it as a blog within the comments?

Will this blog occupy the coveted upper left corner? If it does how long will it remain at the top of the heap? Life is full of it's uncertainties.

I figure Niner4ever is busily researching factoids for his article on the defensive backs. Ratman too is working on his play for the most desired screen real estate on the faithful site. I'm tired of researching football factoids for my latest article. I just need to blow off some steam. Here it is.

OK, I live in the country in a real small town. It's a quiet little place. Thirty miles from one of the most violent cities in the nation is a little town of about 200 people. We have a vegetable stand in town. That is our major industry save for the two little mom and pop mini marts. The vegetable stand is a testament to our town.

The guy puts his vegatables out on the main highway in sacks with the prices marked on them. You simply take the vegetables. When you have what you need, you put the money in the cookie jar on the right side of the stand. If you need change you just leave your $20 bill and take the change out of the cookie jar. Nobody takes his vegetables either. It's my kind of town. I really like the simplicity of living here.

Despite the murder rate in the neighboring metropolitan area we crank out some pretty good football players for the NFL. Since I've lived here I've watched players in high school turn into pros in the NFL.

As a sophomore in high school Roddy White had that pro look as he scampered past his opponents. He's still doing a pretty good job of it in the pros. Newly drafted Bengals NT Carlos Dunlap used to play in the neighboring town and you could just tell he was going places. Our next export to the NFL is A J Green who's catching footballs for the Georgia Bulldogs right now. He played for the Green Wave in high school. To me our most important NFL export is CB Phillip Adams of the San Francisco Forty Niners.

I want to write an ariticle about him for the Bleacher Report but there is no info on him. In a few days I've made up my mind to traipse through the woods to the little school he went to. I might be able to dig up some facts about him but more than that some video.

Maybe I can prompt someone to put some video up on him. I've found nothing so far. I've read that in addition to the Packers being interested in him Coach Singletary has a particular interest in Phillip. That interested me but there is not much out there on him. Good luck writing about him Niner4ever. I feel your pain.

Football. It must be around the corner. Already another alligator mating season is drawing to a close here on the home front. Once again we're looking out for alligators under our cars as the news anchors tell us to.

It's warming up in the southeast and getting more humid by the day. I'm betting that the ticks are heating up cotton balls in Vegas too. Clemson has played the orange and white game. We're getting there people. Hang in there.

Here on the farm I can tell it's nearing football time. I try to get all the chores done before August because nothing gets in the way of Sunday afternoons, my remote control and my NFL Sunday ticket.

There have been many trips to plumbing hell for irrigation parts. I needed to repair a tractor induced failure on the water line for the trees that line our driveway. I was blading the driveway off and caught a lateral with a ripper tooth. Oops.

Tractor Supply has seen a fair amount of visits from us as well. This is the time when I try to get all of the fences repaired and reinforced. No way I'm going to be out fixing fence when a Niners game is on. The rest of the games I can record and watch later. It's just my dumb luck that the horses always get out on Niner day.

Speaking of Tractor Supply, a funny thing happened on the way home from a recent visit. As I said I live in a real small town in the woods. While I was driving by a house on highway 27 I saw a young woman come out of the house wearing only a towel. A car was driving up the driveway and origianally that is what caught my eye and caused me to look in that direction.

As the car approached her she opened the towel and quickly closed it. There she was. Standing there for a brief second in her birthday suit. At first I thought it was an accident. Perhaps she had forgotten that she was otuside. Then it happened again. As the car pulled up next to her she dropped the towel and ran into the house.

Each time I pass that house I look to that yard now. To my disappointment she has not been in the yard. They did put out signs of their loyalty and they are my kinfolk. The people who live there are Clemson Tiger fans.

Our town is divided. Divided like the Hatfields and the McCoys. You're either a fan of the Tigers (go Tigers) or a Cock. A gamecock that is. The only thing better than the prelims of pre-season is pre-season itself.

Buy the rooooooom. Get the TV. Buy the rooooooom. Get the TV. Buy the rooooooom. Get the TV. Last October we bought some new furniture and TV package at a furniture store downtown. Our plan was to pay if off in 6 weeks by making one third payments each paycheck. One thing led to another. Two trips to the hospital and $124,000 later we still owed for the furniture.

This past week we sealed the deal on it finally. The salesperson got her commission. She's happy. In the process of taking until forever to pay off the furniture the room store upped the anty on the size of the TV. Our original deal last year was for a 42" but this new package has a 50" plasma.

We went into the store the other day and renegotiated our deal. We canned a couple of tables and 2 ugly lamps that we didn't want. We were able to get the upgrade on the 50" TV and even the swivel stand for it. Now I will be able to efficiently lollygag in any corner of the room while I watch football.   We're happy.  Is everybody happy?  (I think Rrydr will come up with correct reference for that obscure remark).

I don't know which one of my personalities will post this. Both of them have calmed down somewhat so I guess that either could be the poster. Billybedamned has been water boarding Fivedecadefan over in the closet for a couple of months now. Fivedecade promised to behave for now, at least until they have to put him on the roids again. They are in agreement for now so maybe it's time for a third personality to emerge.  No, probably not.

While I decide what name to log on with I'll be finishing up on my article for the Bleacher Report. I've been writing on the Niners decision to keep Jimmy Raye as OC. I'm nearing the finish.

Actually I'm finished but I'm going to compile my facts. Some rude dude baited me on my last article and I decided not to bite. Methinks he may lay in wait for me to return. That's what I'd do.

With what I have to say about Jimmy I'm sure to draw comments. I'll keep you all... Wait. Where's the southern in me? I'll tell all y'all about it when I post it.  Thas what ah'm tawkin bout.

Look no qb in this league could of did anything with all the different offense coordinators and the o line he had when he first came to the 49ers.Lets give him a chance see what he's made of if he dose'nt do anything with the o line and the weapons at his disposal well then its time to GO.

For the past several months we have been forced to comment in the blog in the top left corner. A coveted spot for us for a while now. We have been blogging within the confines of the comment block for what, seven months now.

How will we ever get used to something as radical as being able to post a blog swiftly? Are we on the verge of finally getting the respect we deserve as the fans of the classiest franchise in all of football? Or is this just another in a long chain of broken promises by kickapps?

I hope for the sake of this site staying usable that it doesn't get messed up with spammers again.Ratman3.jpg
