Tackle Joe Staley continues his blog at 49ersfaithful.net with a new name: “Staley’s Musings: Random Thoughts from a Big Guy.”
The other day I saw the new Quentin Tarantino movie and it was really, really good. I’m not a huge fan of Tarantino’s work, but this movie was entertaining. I was really in to the storyline and the acting was great. But it was really graphic and violent, so probably not the best flick for the young ones. I went out with some teammates on one of our nights off and we were happy with the movie selection.
I’ve been really trying to take advantage all of the time we’ve had off at camp, because there’s hardly any time off. I’ve been going back to my house, and making sure everything’s good there.
But I want the world to know that I have a bone to pick with my gardener. I was gone for a week at camp and I told him to make sure my water’s on, because I’m not going to be around for a while.
When I came back last week to check on everything, my lawn was brown with a bunch of spots in it. It looks like nothing’s been done to it! I think they just mow it and get out of there. So I’m going to call him up today or tomorrow and speak with him. Maybe have a few choice words for him…
I also had some choice words for our rookies. Actually Dave [Baas] and Adam [Snyder] were and I added some too. We were up in Napa practicing with the Raiders and somehow we managed to get the information of which room each player was staying in at our team hotel.
Dave and Adam were prank calling everybody. They were calling the rooms pretending to be a reporter from some made up newspaper. The best one was their call to Bear Pascoe. Bear asked them first, “Did you clear this with the PR department? Do they know about this?” Dave was like, “Yeah, yeah, I cleared it with them.” So he asked some questions and I guess Bear was really in to it. He was like, “Yeah, yeah, I think I’m doing really well…” Bear had really serious answers and they both started laughing.
Then two minutes later, without knowing Dave had talked to him, I called him with the same exact thing. I said that I was some made up newspaper. He said, “Really, you’re not from so-and-so newspaper?” I was like, “What?” Bear had named the newspaper that Dave had used. He again asked if they cleared it with the PR department. I said yeah and he answered all of my questions with serious answers. It was so funny!
Another thing that’s funny to me is Twitter. Everyone uses it now and I kind of think it’s stupid. I don’t get it, but I have an account actually. I guess that kind of makes me a hypocrite! But I practically never use it. I just use it to express information to the world, like this or even this and who could forget this classic. In all honesty, I don’t even know what to do with it except say random things. I don’t know why you would use it. Who cares what you’re doing? I have one because I thought it was something.
But actually now that I say that, I updated my account the other morning. I wanted everybody to know that there was only one week left in camp; I guess that’s why Twitter’s important…
A lot of people are making a big deal about this new Cowboys stadium that we’re going to playing at this Saturday, frankly I don’t really care about it. They could give me a cement field to play on, and I would be just as happy. But it will be interesting to see how many people they have there. I heard they have about 100,000 people for regular season games. In the future, I think it will be like playing in a college stadium again.
The good thing about this game is that it means we get to play a road game. I’m excited to travel. I’ve got a new suit that I’m going to wear; well actually I just got a new shirt and tie. That’s like getting a new suit kind of, right? It’s a navy blue suit with red pin stripes.
I totally get overdressed for road games. Even last year when we didn’t have to wear a suit and tie, [we could wear dress slacks with a shirt] I would wear suits and look my best. I buy a bunch of suits and I want to wear them… might as well wear them if I’m buying them! I did go to a lot of weddings this offseason and you’d think I’d get have the opportunity to wear some of my suits, but I didn’t. They were all away and I didn’t even want to travel with them.
I know I’m able to travel in style but I think Alex [Smith] needs to watch himself a little more. His suits are way too tailor-made. I’m sorry if that’s harsh Alex, I’m just saying… I’m also always interested to see what Adam wears because he never wears suits. He hates suits! If he’s wearing one, he always tops it off with a backwards hat. He’s a surfer, through and through. Last year he wore hats, but we can’t do that this year, so it will be interesting to see what his travel gear will be.
I spend a lot of time with my teammates, especially on the offensive line, sometimes too much time. But now we have a new players lounge at the team facility and the o-line guys are hanging out in there a bunch. The new players lounge is great. It’s actually about ten times better than I thought it was going to be. I felt like it was going to be a little station for food and there would be a couch or two.
But this thing is hooked up. In there you have: three PlayStation 3s, three X-Box’s, four HD-TV’s, six computers, a bunch of massage chairs, sofas, couches and a kitchen. It’s real nice. We had some time one day and I played Adam in Fight Night 4. For the record, I was 2-0, and I knocked him out both times. Then I fought Barry [Sims]. Barry challenged me as well and I knocked him out too! I did have Mike Tyson though, so it was kind of cheating. He had James Toney. James “Lights Out” Toney.
Another favorite activity of mine at the team facility is watching game film in the offensive line’s meeting room. I especially enjoy watching the preseason game film. I like watching the younger guys play. Out of all of them, I really like watching [Jacob] Bender play. You can totally know when Jake thinks he did well and when he thinks he did poorly on any given play. If he gets a good block, he’ll throw up his smoking gun tattoo on his bicep and point at it. Then he’ll beat his chest and stuff. It’s hilarious to watch on film! When he does bad he kind of starts mumbling to himself and flails his arms around. That’s funny too! But it’s great to watch those guys because when they are in late in the game – it’s kind of straight up football.
There is not much you can get from the schemes and stuff in these preseason games, so I always watch for funny things that happen, like someone who trips and falls. And I always, always look for someone doing something stupid after the plays. Like [Alex]Boone for example. When Kory Sheets scored a touchdown, Boone ran up to him and pointed at himself then at Kory, then they did a belly bump… it was so funny to watch!
I’ve got to bid everyone a farewell for this blog entry. But before I go, I want to say hello to my family and my grandma in Pennsylvania. Also, my thoughts are with my Aunt Joanie. And lastly, rest in peace Norm, my dog of 16 years. He passed away a little bit ago.

Dairygal32, 11 months ago | FlagDang, Sorry to hear about Norm. It's hard to lose a friend. Sixteen years is a good long life for a dog. That proves you loved him and were a good owner. RIP Norm.
fivedecadefan, 11 months ago | FlagThis is the first of these I've read. I enjoyed it. I'll be sure to read more. Good luck in Dallas.

Niner4ever, 11 months ago | Flagtwitter sucks! Tell the Oline great job against the Raiders! Tell em sorry but that's the new standard. We know the Raiders suck, but if it can be done against them. We can do it to other teams as well. I hope Snyder gets healthy soon and Marvel Smith did an awesome Job. Chilo rocked too! Let get after it fellas. Let's go earn some respect. No one in the NFL respects the 49ers any more. Time for the offensive line to make them change theri minds!!!!
Return to Champions!
