Now is the time

The Niners should sell out in this draft.  They should be willing to trade future picks and veterans to get what we need, which is 2 or 3 offensive lineman, a cornerback, a safety, and a big play running back/receiver who can also return kicks.  I have watched a bunch of college football and done some research over my winter break.  With our first pick, either trade up to get Dez Bryant or Joe Haden.  I doubt they will be on the board at 13.  Or we can trade down with New England, who has the 22nd pick and three 2nd rounders.  Tampa Bay has two high 2nd rounders, too, so maybe the Niners can find a way to get one of those.

With the 13th and 16/17th (coin flip later) and the 47th picks, the Niners have a bunch of options.  Trading down and getting more picks in the top three rounds should be a top priority.  This draft is stacked with talent.  Guys they should try to get: Bryant, Haden, CJ Spiller, Javid Best, Brian Bulaga, Taylor Mays, Anthony Davis, Jordan Shipley, and Ryan Matthews.  There are others but these guys are good and should be available.

I love the Niners and I want to see them win a couple Super Bowls in the next 5 or 6 years.  They have a solid nucleus with Crabtree, Willis, Lee, Staley, Franklin, Spencer, Gore, and Smith (HOPEFULLY, SMITH!)  This is the year to fill in the gaps and start winning.  Another option would be trade the picks for proven veterans, like Brandon Marshall.  Also, Nate Clements' contract needs to be restructured, $10 million a year?  No freaking way!

  • I live in Houston, TX where the housing market wasn't hit as bad as other U.S.markets. Would it be better to become an agent now (before the tax credit period expires) or in the summertime? (I'm a teacher now, great job stability, but I'm not a happy teacher.)

  • I agree essentially with goldrush here.  He makes some good points with all of what he says.  Singletary and MacLoughan are on probation with me.  I don't think that they did well last year with the picks they made starting with Crabtree.  Yes he will make a positive impact on the team in time but his negative impact with his holdout hurt the team at a critical time in its development.

Too much dependence was placed on free agent O linemen last year and none of them finished the season.  That mistake probably cost us a player of the caliber of Michael Oher who in my opinion would have been a much better pick at #10 than Crabtree was based on the needs of the team.  I don't know about switching Staley back to the right side or not.  He seems to be doing well at either one.  I say they need to concentrate on getting some big, mean, aggressive and agile Olinemen this year.  Players that will be good enough to start right out of college and those are first round pick players.  Trading our first round picks would hurt us in my opinion.

First and foremost they need to do whatever it takes to draft CJ Spiller.  He is a kick returner, a great running back and receiver out of the backfield and he can even throw TD passes. He would be a great compliment to Frank Gore.

  • couple of things i dont think will come to pass. 1- keep in mind all the issues we had last year with crabtree and parker when talking about dez bryant. true enough this organization may demand to know if he is signable before taking him and he is an immense talent, but no way they blindly jump off the ledge with this crew again. 2 -with "single-minded singletary" in charge, i dont know if trading down and getting more picks is really worth it. he does not seem to be that good of an evaluator of talent IMO!! look at his history- he DIDNT want to draft Willis (started off on a bad note with me), he is responsible for what is essentially 5 wasted picks- coffee, mckillop, :::::pascoe::::: , and taylor and jean-francois. not that these players wont at some point have an impact but up to this point how much contribution (other than a few special teams plays) have we really gotten from our WHOLE 2009 DRAFT???...
I know scotty mcGM is partly to blame, but come on. not to turn this into a singletary bashing ( which i really want to do) but just pointing out that IMO, we should make the most of what we have in the pocket.
Now trading up (a few spots) to get into the 6-9 slots sounds good, possibly to get one of the 1rst tier tackles opposed to settling for one of the 2nd tier available at the 13 or 16/17 slot. i agree and have been on the train begging for a trade for marshall since he first started making demands. but i dont think we should try to get into the top 5 picks, simply put, it would set us so far back as far as what we would have to give up to get there. i see our needs and possibilities as follows, barring trades
13-anthony davis, spiller, baluga, haden (in that order if all avail.)
16/17-taylor mays, mike iupati, jahvid best (in that order assuming none of the others are avail)
    WE HAVE "NEEDS"
as in "NEED" to get better, "NEEDS" to get back to winning SB's, "NEEDS" to go with positional needs instead of best player available. That philosophy can work with our second first round pick, but in actuality, we really need to address the tackle AND guard positions with FIRST ROUND TALENT!!!!!!!
"NEEDS" in order of priority are tackle (future LT so Staley can move back to right side where he is better) followed by guard, safety, kr/pr, corner, olb/pass rush
