It's pretty interesting to see that most mock drafts have us picking up C.J. Spiller, Trent Williams, Everson Griffin, or Jerry Hughes in the first round and an assortment of CBs and Safetys during the second round.
Drafting Spiller would be a strange idea for me. Seeing how Gore is only in his 5th year and Coffee is a rookie. However doing so would really bring out that "smash mouth run first" kind of offense that Singletary has been wanting. With 3 RBs and a fairly dependable Moran Norris our backfield would be very dominate.
Secondly our up and down offensive line is in need of a real anchor, a young player that we can depend on. Any one of the OTs in the draft would do nothing but improve our OL and in turn give Alex better protection and open up lanes for the running game.
Joe Haden or Taylor Mays would become instant playmakers for our defense and give us an edge against alot of deep threats around the league and the LB/DE positions would get a boost from either Hughes or Griffin but my personal favorite would have to be Jerry Hughes. If he somehow falls far enough(as some drafts have him going after 13 but before 16/17 - I've also seen him in the second round on a few pages) he would be a real diamond in the rough. I'm from Utah and have been watching this guy in MWC the last few years; this guy is a playmaker and nothing else. I've seen him singlehandly win or keep TCU in several tight games when their offense wasn't getting it done.
I have to say I've heard people saying we need another QB, whether it would be a hungry veteran to mentor Smith or a young gun to give him some competition, that's the real question. Urban Meyer made a real machine when he got his hands on Alex and it's almost backfired on him in the pros. He lacks improvisional skills and has that tendency to roll right when pressured. But yet he is a great scrambler and has a great arm and vision. With these pros and cons and all the baggage Alex has had to endure I would go with a hungry vet that can still teach him some things but at the same time give him some competition. Bottom line keep smith as the starter, let go of Shaun Hill and bring in a vet and let Nate Davis continue mature as the "QB of the future".
thegoldrushgang, 2 months ago | Flagi like your ideas. i, unlike you have not seen enough of jerry hughes. my fiance is a TCU alumn, but living in Atlanta, they dont get much coverage unless its on espn or something. the couple of games (bowl game included) he seemed very fast but very small. could the pressure he has be getting and accolades he's achieved be attributed to the talent level of the MWC?, dont take that question or this statement the wrong way, but its not the SEC, or any other power conference. as far as smith goes, i had a thought (while watching the packers/cards playoff game),, I envisioned all the smith baggers saying "see, we coulda had rodgers, look what he's doing" i had this thought, after seeing rodgers rolling out to his right MULTIPLE TIMES -- then connecting with his targets. or picking up positive yardage. difference is that rodgers' rcvrs extend the play by continuously moving, smiths targets dont (havent been) doing that. i think smith needs to work on lowering his release point, and footwork, but other than that, i think we have our qb for the forseeable future. if davis beats him out, then thats even better.
