Manny Lawson continues his popular column, "Manny's Law," with his second entry of the 2009 offseason. Enjoy catching up with the 49ers outside linebacker as he talks about his thoughts on the 49ers role as underdogs, his relationship with teammate Parys Haralson and the 49ers new player’s lounge.
Man, I'm glad training camp is over with. That's first and foremost. I'm glad that's over with. Now we can really get into the gameplan. Now it starts to really count and we finally have our team here. I truly believe that this team is special. I'm looking forward to this game against Arizona.
I'm looking forward to a very tough and physical game.
That's the way we practice all of training camp. Arizona has something to prove that them going to the Super Bowl wasn't a fluke. I think that every team they go up against they are going to try and make it a physical game. Right now, we're their first opponent and they're our first opponent. I'm really looking forward to the first game of the season by starting the season the way I want to.
For me, I love to be the underdog and then come out victorious. For us to be on their home field, they think they are going to win. I love that, I love being the underdog. I hope we go out there and are very productive in our game on all three sides of the ball: offense, defense, and special teams. Then we can come back home on a nice happy plane right and then I would enjoy a bag of Reese's pieces.
Sometimes it's not the whole team that can be an underdog though. You can be the underdog when you are matched up one-on-one with opponents. Sometimes it can even be in video games. Anytime I'm the underdog, I have a little chip on my shoulder. I'm always the underdog in everything I do. Even if it's a height contest, I will find a way to be the underdog.
When we go on these road trips, man, I love sitting in the emergency exit rows. Now that we're down to our 53, we don't have to share as many seats. It also depends on what plane we get. If we get the plane with two seats on the sides and three in the middle, I always get a middle seat so I can stretch out. But if I can get an exit row seat, I don't care about leaning back or reclining as long as I can keep things off my knees and stretch my legs out. I love to lean back, take my shoes off and let me feet air out. That's the best.
As I’m trying to put this column together, Parys Haralson keeps trying to interrupt me. That's what he does. He has his moments. Sometimes he just irritates me but I love him to death, he's like a brother. But a lot of times he irritates me. He also owes me 30 dollars for his haircut that I paid for. He's going to keep irritating me until he pays me my money.
It’s nice that our lockers aren’t right by each other anymore. It's almost kind of funny because we're both outside linebackers and if you look at the locker room, there are defensive linemen between two outside linebackers. So it's almost like the way we line up on the field. I think our equipment staff had that in mind when they were rearranging the locker room.
But I really like the situation, it keeps him and I apart but we're also together. We can talk back and forth. I don't have to worry about him invading my space except for when he comes over here to use my tape and steal some of my crystal lights. He also might need some lotion once in a while. Other than that, he has his area and I have mine.
Overall, I really like how the locker room looks now that it has been remodeled. It almost turned out like a dome. I like it this way better than a dome because in a dome, I would probably just go crazy sitting here and looking at people. I wouldn’t like it especially if we had a tough day. To look at someone who has a tough day look on their face, knowing that we've had a tough day makes the day even tougher. But with how it is now, I can sit in my locker and can't really see anyone around me.
Out new player’s lounge is wonderful. We have reclining chairs, massage chairs, TVs, a kitchen with snacks, and video games. I just recently found out that we even have a lounge. Probably about two weeks ago.
I was always confused because I would come here and see cars in the parking lot but the meeting rooms, training room, locker room and weight room would be empty. This one day, I went into our training room, and I'm sitting down, just relaxing and calming my nerves laying down on the little training table.
Vernon Davis walked up to me and said "Man, what are you doing? You need anything?"
I said, "No Vern I'm good, thank you. I'm just laying here. I don't want to relax here or in the locker room."
Then Vernon said, "Why don't you go to the lounge?"
"Lounge?, What lounge?" I asked.
Vernon proceeded to walk me to the lounge. That's probably one of the best things on earth right now. All the guys go in there when we have free time and get some cereal. My favorite right now in there is Raisin Bran Crunch. I've really been getting on my cereal game a lot lately since we have a lounge.
We have water and juices, which I like because it's important to get my Vitamin-C. But most of all, it's great for just relaxing. I come in with my flip-flops on, kick my feet up, and then I’ll be watching whatever is on TV. No one cares what is on; it's just great to lounge. If we have a lot of time, I just go to sleep. I don't play any video games, I just watch the other guys. I play sometimes when I'm at home, but usually not here.
