I was real shocked when I learned that my offensive line coach, George Warhop, had been fired. He taught me a lot of stuff – not just about football, but how to be a professional and what this business is about and how you have to come to work every day. He was a great mentor, as well as a great coach. I guess part of this business is producing and as an offensive line, we haven’t lived up to the expectations. Our sack numbers have been high and we haven’t won games and that’s when things like this happen – to Warhop and Coach Nolan. I’ve really come to learn that even more so in this second season. No one is on scholarship, it’s about producing results.
Practices this week have been really good. The tempo, as you can expect with Coach Singletary, is amped up. It’s a lot more intense. He wants every player on every play to be in and out of the huddle fast, breaking it with authority, sprinting to the line of scrimmage and getting ready to go, finishing every play and then after you are done with the play, sprinting five yards and getting back to the huddle fast. On Wednesday, we did the same number of reps as usual but finished 20 minutes early. That shows how quick the tempo was going. Thursday was the same way and we did a lot better with everyone finishing and getting in and out of the huddle the way he wants. He’s a stickler too. There were plays where the offense or defense didn’t execute exactly the way we were supposed to, and he’d run the play over until we got it right. So, we’ve definitely already felt his impact and I think guys are responding well.
You guys might remember how excited I was last year when we played in New York and I got to see Time Square for the first time. Well, this time around, I did nothing in New York. We stayed even farther out in New Jersey and given all the traffic to get into the city, we just decided it would be a waste of effort to get there. I was very proud to hear that the Central Michigan Chippewas were victorious against the Western Michigan Broncos, our biggest rival. I’d like to give a little shout out to my buddy Brian Brunner. He’s a fifth-year senior who has ridden the bench every year, but stuck with it and was able to start this game because of an injury to the starting quarterback, and he played amazing. He had 350 yards passing and three touchdowns and he even got on ESPN College Live or something and got a helmet sticker from Lou Holtz. I’d also like to give a shout out to Gregory Wojt, their tackle, just because.
Last week in New York, I played my best game of the year. I graded out my highest with a 94% overall. I’m feeling very comfortable now at left tackle. I feel like I am in control with my hands and my feet and I’ve played with more confidence in recent weeks.
We got crushed for the run game, but we only tried to run it 11 times. The times we ran were in nickel situations where we expected the box to be open. They’d instead bring safety blitzes that were unaccounted for and then there were a couple of plays where we did get great movement, but we just didn’t execute. On the aborted snap and fumble, we completely sealed off the whole defense. Adam Snyder was actually running down the sidelines with nobody to block and Frank probably would have ran 80 yards for a touchdown and probably would have finished with 12 carries for almost 100 yards, and nobody would have been talking about us screwing up in the run. The runs were there, we just didn’t execute. So, I have a tremendous amount of confidence in our run game.
Adam’s kid still hasn’t come yet, but I think they are going to induce next week. I went out and bought like 15 outfits for the kid on my day off. I hit Babies R Us and then Baby Gap. They are skater outfits, like dark jeans with henley t-shirts.
I actually checked out a chick flick recently on DVD - Sex and the City. It was actually kind of entertaining and pretty funny, and other than that, I can’t think of anything else to share. I’ve been pretty boring lately.
My parents will be here tonight, and so I had my maid come and clean the house yesterday so that my mom has no reason to complain about my place being a mess. I’m taking them to Alcatraz tomorrow night. I’ve been there before, but never at night time so I’m looking forward to it.
It’s huge for us to play well and get a win over Seattle, especially with all of the changes this week. We need to get back on the right foot. We can get a win. We got one before against this team up at their place, and this time we’ve got the 49ers Faithful on our side backing us up. We’ll be able to hear the cadence and we should be able to go out and get a victory.
RichB, 2 years ago | FlagDo you believe coah Nolan would still be there had the 49ers had a steady offensive coordinator? I believe that has had a big impact on the offense especially with the quarterbac k position. Hard to get used to something and at the end of the season learn something new. That's pretty unfair to coach Nolan.
waabog, 2 years ago | FlagHey Joe, congrats on your rating in the NY game. Keep working hard and results will come. I called your dad last night, didn't know he was with you this week. Have a great time with them and give him and your mom a big hug for me. Not too many 49er fans in Tennessee so I visit the site every day. I'm with 9R4EVA, I look for the Joe Show all the time! I love it! Reminds me of college life with your dad!
9R4EVA, 2 years ago | FlagYo Staley, I'm diggin' the Joe Show. Keep it up. I saw the Nolan firing weeks ago, and am jazzed that Singletary is the coach. I actually hoped he would take over. I hate to say this about my Niners, but you guys collectively have played soft this year. We need more guys playing with intensity, and ready to play some smash mouth style football. For example, our O-line with the exception of you, and Wragge are really not smash mouth style football players. Jonas Jennings is another physical player, but he can't seem to stay healthy. How about urging yo boy Snyder to get a mean streak. Maybe it's time to get Chilo Rachal in there because I know he has a mean streak. I won't even get into the defense. Besides Willis, Takeo Spikes, Clements, and Justin Smith, I can't think of anybody else that plays with a mean streak. Again, I'm excited Singletary is our new coach. Sorry, for talkin' trash, but I've been a die hard Niner fan all my life. It's tough seein' my team lose. I hope this is a new era in Niner football.
